5 great sleepover bed solutions for children
Hosting a birthday party sleepover? Visiting the cousins for a holiday? From Z Beds to pull-out trundles, here are five children’s bed solutions for when you need to accommodate little guests…
There comes a time in every child’s life – normally between the ages of 4 and 8 – when they inevitably want to have a sleepover. And while they don’t always seem too bothered about the ‘sleep’ part, you do still want them to get some, so it’s a good idea to be properly prepared! Ideally each child should have their own dedicated sleeping space, so they can settle comfortably (and to minimise the likelihood of them waking each other up, when they have finally nodded off).
Luckily here are plenty of practical and fun options to choose from. Here, arranged in order from ‘quick and easy overnighters’ to proper beds suitable for a long stay, are our top children’s sleepover solutions…
For tips on making a sleepover go smoothly, see our post: How to host a first kids’ sleepover.
1) Bed in a bag
The bed in a bag consists of a mattress made from five comfy cushions, and a knapsack. Simple, portable, and as easy as you like to get out and put away, these are perfect to take with you on a family visit. Or keep a few stashed away in a cupboard for when you have to host several friends for a sleepover – when all the fun is over, simply tuck everything inside the handy storage bag and pop it away!
Made from British Standard fire-retardant fabric, with a 100% washable cotton cover, our bed in a bag is made to order and comes in a choice of 22 gorgeous designs.
2) Z Beds
Z Beds are a bit like miniature sofa-beds for young children. Lightweight and easy to store, they fold up neatly to form a little seat during the day – perfect for a nursery – and then unfold into a super comfy foam bed for sleepovers.
Z Beds are a fun and practical sleepover solution and are great if you have limited space. Ours are available in a range of beautiful designs, from pink hearts to cute scottie dogs, or the funky (if a bit ominous-sounding) jungle party!

3) Trundle beds
Trundle beds, also known as truckle beds, are proper, solid, comfy beds that store away neatly underneath a normal bed, and can simply be pulled out when you need it: handy for one night sleepovers but also suitable for longer stays.
The Children’s Furniture Company’s standalone trundle bed is lightweight and comes on wheels, making it super easy to manoeuvre, and can be used with any standard single bed:
4) Integrated trundle beds
A more permanent solution is to go for a single bed with an integrated trundle bed. Our Willow bed (above) is a beautiful children’s single bed in its own right, and it has the added bonus of coming with an integrated trundle bed. It can also be popped up to form a fully flat double bed – offering even more flexibility!
Tip: If you’re going to use this option regularly, we recommend choosing two trundle mattresses, so that both mattresses are at the same level.
5) Captain’s beds
Top of the tree for sleepover solutions is a captain’s bed. They offer storage aplenty, with their large built-in drawers and an extra hidden surprise – a handy trundle bed.
Made from super strong rubberwood and a three-coat paint finish, to protect against those inevitable knocks and marks, captain’s beds are both practical and fun.
Our Scribble captain’s bed (above) comes with a cool chalkboard for those midnight messages, while the exclusive Butterworth captain’s bed (below) boasts a unique storage headboard, which doubles up as a secret hideaway for sleepover goodies!
