Creating the perfect playroom for your child

Creating the perfect playroom for your child

Children’s playrooms are magical places – somewhere to have fun, learn and be creative. We look at how to kit out your playroom to make a space that’s fun for the kids, while also keeping all those toys nice and tidy…

Organising your playroom

To help get things organised from the outset, it’s important to think about the best way to arrange your kids’ playroom. Dividing the space into different zones for particular activities is a great way of organising things. Here are some ideas to help get you started:

1) Crafting zone

Children love crafting, and every playroom should have an area with a table and chairs for those sitting down tasks, such as arts and crafts, writing stories, doing puzzles etc. (For older kids, this can also double up as a place for doing homework.) Include a small cupboard or storage unit for stashing away all those crafting bits and pieces at the end of the day.

2) Dressing up area

Role play is a wonderful way of developing children’s imaginations and social skills. Include a dressing up area with a clothes rail, a mirror, and some fun and colourful storage baskets for those all-important accessories – such as tiaras, cowboy hats, etc.

3) Reading corner

Books play a huge part in promoting children’s learning and broadening their horizons. Plus they offer a great place to escape to at the end of the day! Set aside a cosy corner with a comfy chair or bean bag, some soft cushions and some snuggly blankets – this will provide a lovely space for bedtime stories, as well as somewhere to chill out with their friends. And don’t forget to keep those books tidy with a child-friendly bookcase.

4) Musical space

Music is a wonderful way for kids to express themselves (and it’s even better when they have a playroom to practise in!) If your child enjoys making music, consider including a dedicated music area for them to store and play their musical instruments.

5) Secret den

Kids love to play make believe, and they also love making dens. With an indoor playhouse or teepee they can let their imaginations run wild, regardless of what the weather’s like outside. It could be a princess’s castle one day and a rocket ship the next – the possibilities are endless!

Decorating your playroom

Get colourful

Children’s playrooms are fun and colourful places, so don‘t be afraid to go bold with the decor by painting the walls in their favourite colours, or using some themed wallpaper. (Make sure you choose a paint that’s wipeable and easy to touch up!)

If you prefer, you can go for a more neutral theme on three of the walls, and make the fourth a colourful feature wall. You can then bring out accents of the same colour by using accessories, such as rugs, light shades, cushions, curtains and bunting. You can view our range of fun and funky children’s bedroom accessories here.

Bear in mind that as they grow, kids’ tastes will change, so it’s a good idea to build in some flexibility for the future. One way of future-proofing your playroom is to use wall stickers and wall art, which will allow you to create a new look without making a long-term commitment.

Showcase their artwork

The playroom is a great place to show off your children’s artwork (and it will give the fridge door a break!) As well as offering a bright and cheerful backdrop, it will add a personal dimension to the playroom.

Choose some favourites with your little one, then simply pop them in some colourful frames and hang them proudly on the wall. Alternatively you can run a clothes line along the length of one wall and then peg up your child’s latest masterpieces.

Installing a chalkboard wall feature is another great (and reversible) way of letting your kids display their creativity!

Include some comfortable floorspace

Children spend many an hour playing on the floor. As well as the walls and decor, it’s also important to consider the flooring.

Laying down a soft, durable and easy to maintain material such as vinyl or colourful foam flooring will help them (and you!) to play more comfortably, while also creating a stable surface for assembling their building blocks or lego. You can jazz things up further by adding in some play mats or rugs.

Keeping things tidy

As well as being a fun place to play, it’s important that your playroom is tidy and organised. You need to make it as easy as possible for your kids to find and access their toys – and to put them away again afterwards. Having the right storage plays a key part in this.

You should include plenty of low level storage that’s easy for the kids to use and will encourage them to keep things tidy. Make sure everything has a designated storage space – you may want to label drawers and boxes, so it’s easy for the kids to see at a glance where everything belongs.

We have a wide range of different types of toy storage and furniture which is specially designed for small people and will suit any playroom – from bookcases and cupboards to toy chests, storage boxes and baskets.

The Jango children’s cupboard is great for storing craft supplies and board games away neatly, while toy storage baskets are ideal for storing soft toys and bulky items. Ours come in a wide range of colours and patterns, from neutral gingham to the bright and funky red star

Meanwhile, to really make the most of the space in your playroom, try including some smart storage solutions, such as our bright and colourful padded toy box which stores toys away neatly and can also serve as a handy additional seat!

See our guide to keeping on top of toy storage here.

Let the fun begin!
