Small double beds: a guide to choose the best bed

Have you been thinking about getting a small double bed but have some questions about how to do this? We are here to help with this handy guide to choosing the best sized bed for your child.

What is the difference between a single, small double and standard double bed?

A UK standard single bed has a mattress measuring 90cm by 190cm and is the most popular children’s bed. The size of the bed itself depends on the headboard and footboard design and therefore will vary from model to model.

A small double bed size uses a mattress measuring 120cm by 190cm. These beds are becoming increasingly popular in the UK and requires a special mattress and bedding. However, the size of the bed itself depends on the headboard and footboard design and will vary from model to model.

A standard double bed is designed for two people to sleep in and has a mattress measuring 135cm by 190cm. The size of the bed itself depends on the headboard and footboard design and will vary from model to model.

What is a small double bed called?

A small double bed is also known as a ‘Queen bed’ or a ‘Three quarter bed’. We like to think it is as a single bed plus half the size again. Although it is wider than a single bed, it is smaller in width than a double. It’s a perfect stepping stone between a single bed and getting a traditional double bed.

It’s a super space saver

It is often the case in modern bedrooms, that space is in short supply. The small double is perfect for kids and teenagers who need a little extra sleeping space without taking too much floor space in the bedroom. It provides plenty of space for one child (perfect for tweens or teens) or likewise two children having a sleepover.

Our handy under bed storage options that fit underneath our single beds will similarly fit underneath our small double beds.

Do I need a special mattress or bedding?

You will need a special sized mattress measuring 120cm by 190cm. The small doubles also need special sized fitted sheets, though standard double flat sheets can also be used. Although there are some retailers that sell queen-sized duvets and duvet covers, we find that traditional double-sized duvet sets are much easier to find and are especially cosy to use on these beds.

Benefits of getting a small double bed:

  • Perfect for balancing extra sleeping space with limited floor space
  • Great for a sleepover for younger children
  • Underbed storage options are still available
  • Handy for your tweenager/teenager

Whether you’re looking to purchase either a single, bunk bed or even a small double bed, find your perfect children’s bed right here.
