Storage Beds – Which would be best suited for you?

Storage Beds – Which would be best suited for you?

As every parent knows, you simply cannot have enough storage space, especially in your child’s bedroom.  Modern family life means that space is at a premium, so every little inch of space is valuable. This makes choosing your new children’s bed an important decision, as it is likely to be the item in your child’s room which has the greatest footprint and therefore takes up the most space.  However, you should view your child’s bed as an opportunity to create space rather than an awkward piece of furniture which simply sucks it up.  Here are a few helpful storage beds as solutions which can give you some food for thought:

Single Beds with Under-bed Storage:

The footprint of a standard single bed is around 2,000cm cubic space, so one of the easier solutions is to make sure that this space does not go to waste.   There are a range of storage drawers which can fit tidily underneath a single bed, which ensures that this space is not wasted should you opt for a standard single bed for your child.  Opt for a large trundle drawer (meaning it’s on wheels), or smaller twin drawers, which can help you get organised. A 3 drawer under bed storage unit allows you get to a third storage compartment under your child’s bed too.  Typically, if there’s no furniture under the bed, the space just gets overlooked, or becomes your child’s dumping ground for dirty washing or old toys, so it’s worth investing in!

Some storage beds are cleverly designed to create some extra storage space in the bed’s headboard itself, for example this Butterworth storage bed.   Combine this with some underbed furniture options for a full children’s storage bed solution.

Cabin Beds:

If you like the idea of using the space directly under your child’s bed then you should consider a cabin bed as an option. Cabin beds are single beds which have a slightly elevated sleeping position with storage units then integrated to maximise the space underneath the bed and save floor space.  Some cabin beds have a four drawer unit integrated into the bed which are perfect for clothes and bedding.  Alternatively, some cabin beds have larger and deeper storage chests, which are ideal for large items such as board games and toys.  A variation of the cabin bed is a captain’s bed (see our ‘Guide to buying a captain’s bed’ blog), this gives you a storage bed combined with a pull-out mattress for sleepovers or extra guests.

Mid Sleeper Beds:

Mid sleeper beds (or midi sleepers) offer another storage bed option.  Recommended for children aged six and older, a mid-sleeper has an even higher sleeping position than a cabin or captain’s bed. It combines a raised sleeping area with a range of interchangeable and free-standing furniture.  One of the most common ways space can be saved with a mid-sleeper bed is by combining a bed, some storage and a desk. Typically, the desk slides underneath the bed when study time is over.  Smaller cupboards, chest of drawers and/or bookcases can all be used to create your bespoke storage bed. Alternatively go with nothing at all for a perfect play den.

High Sleeper beds:

A high sleeper or loft bed goes a step further.  Think of it as a bunk bed without the bottom bunk (see our blog on ‘How to choose a space-saving high-sleeper bed’).  This offers a high space to let you place full sized free-standing furniture, or even a second bed, under the sleeper area.  Again, this is recommended for slightly older children of age six years and up.
