The best Halloween activities! ?

We love Halloween here at TCFC! It comes with so many fun activities that we can do with our kids. Here are some of our favourite:

Carving pumpkins

Who’s kids don’t love creating crazy pumpkin faces every year?! Nothing gets us in the Halloween spirit quite like seeing the many carved pumpkins flickering away at everyone’s front door step.

Why not share your creations with us this year!

If you do carve a pumpkin this year, remember to save the scooped out pumpkin seeds! You can roast them with oil & sea salt for a simple, tasty snack.

Ever wondered where pumpkin carving comes from? The tradition of the carved pumpkin (or the Jack O’Lantern as some may call it) has some interesting origins. Find out more in our blog, Spooky Halloween Facts We Love.

Halloween decorating

One of the best ways to celebrate Halloween is by decorating the house – an activity that can be fun for the whole family! You’ll find loads of seasonal decorations in local shops and garden centres, or you can collect beautiful Autumn leaves & pinecones on your walks to create some themed décor. And they don’t have to be super scary. Adorn your front door with a Halloween wreath, or fill the house with orange flowers and pumpkins galore.

Here are some examples we love from the team at TCFC!

For indoor wall displays, we recommend using re-usable Wall Stickers, as they can be used again the following year and wont cause any damage to your wall! Plus, they’re super easy to put up, making it a fun decorating activity for the kids.

Movie night

There’s nothing like a family film night! Why not cosy up on the sofa with all the Halloween sweets & chocolate you can find, and watch a spooky movie with the kids! (not too scary though…)

Here are some of our favourite Halloween family films:

  1. Hocus Pocus (PG) – we love the Sanderson sisters, it is a yearly ritual to watch this in our house. They would make fantastic costumes for trick or treating too.
  2. Ghostbusters (12) – there has been a remake of the 1984 classic that has an all-star female cast and we thought it was very funny. However, there is something about the original that pulls us back year after year, I love the original cast and ghosts, though just be mindful that the film is a typical 80s film so the language and themes are consistent of the time.
  3. Hotel Transylvania (PG) – there are now three Hotel Transylvania films and they are very enjoyable with humour for the children and adults alike. A fourth instalment is heading our way in January 2022.
  4. The Addams Family (PG) – there are two live action Addams Family films featuring Anjelica Huston as Morticia and Raul Julia as Gomez and they are both fantastic. There are also two animated films, the sequel having just been released in the cinema, if you fancy a trip out this half term.
  5. The Worst Witch (U) – this classic from my childhood was released in 1986 and features a singing Tim Curry. I introduced it to my daughters last year and it was a huge hit. It follows the storyline of the eponymous book and we love it!

Halloween baking

Pumpkin Pie

Pumpkins aren’t only good for carving faces! Why not make the most of your pumpkins by making some pumpkin pie?
Don’t worry, we don’t expect you to make pastry from scratch. This isn’t Bake Off.

So, roll out your shop-bought pastry and get baking! Here’s a recipe for pumpkin pie that we love.
And if you’re not carving pumpkins this year or simply prefer the lazier recipe (we’ve all been there), pop to the shop where you might find some ready-made pumpkin pie filling! We promise not to tell…

Halloween Gingerbread Skeletons

Gingerbread men – a kid-friendly favourite!

Getting the kids involved in the kitchen is never easier than when there are spoons to lick and biscuits to decorate. So why not make something slightly scarier for Halloween with some Gingerbread Skeletons?! Get the kids to help decorate the men by adding white icing bones or ‘wrap’ them up like little mummies.

Find a great recipe here.

Family Halloween parties

Halloween parties don’t have to be about scary haunted houses and themed cocktails (although we probably wouldn’t decline the invitation…)

How about inviting the whole family over for some spooky themed, kid-friendly fun? If you’re planning on entertaining guests this Halloween, there are plenty of themed snacks, games and more that are fun for both kids and adults. Need some ideas? Try these:

Make your own Jack O’Lantern Jelly

  1. Cut the tops of large oranges and scoop out the orange juice and pulp.
  2. Use this juice to add to gelatine leaves or to melted pre-packaged orange jelly.
  3. Pour your jelly mixture back into the orange cases & place in the fridge to set.
  4. Once the jelly has set, carve out some scary faces!

Set up a game of Apple Bobbing

Apple bobbing is a great game for traditional Halloween parties! Simply fill a large basin or tub with water and throw in some apples. Players have to keep their hands behind their back and try to grab an apple from the water with nothing but their teeth! It’s way harder than it sounds…
As random as it seems, this traditional game has some surprising origins!

Trick or Treating

Time for the kids to get their hands on some tasty treats! Getting dressed up and taking your little one’s out trick or treating is one of the most famous ways to celebrate Halloween. We like to think that the best costumes get the best treats, so best bring your A game if you want those little pumpkin-shaped sweet baskets filled to the brim!
